Supports will help Northwest B.C. prepare for emergency events, says NDP MLA Cullen

SMITHERS – New Democrat MLA Nathan Cullen says $125,000 for Emergency Operations Centres will help communities in Northwest B.C. prepare for emergency events.

“As we are seeing more intense wildfire seasons and flooding events, being prepared for emergencies is top of mind for everyone,” said Nathan Cullen, MLA for Stikine. “We’re providing communities with the support they need to protect people’s homes and livelihoods when disaster strikes.”

The following local governments and First Nations are receiving funding:

  • Bulkley-Nechako Regional District – EOC Crisis Communication Equipment Acquisition
    Total Approved Funding: $25,000
  • Glen Vowell Band – Sik-E-Dakh Emergency Operations

Total Approved Funding: $25,00

  • Smithers, Telkwa – EOC Resiliency Project

Total Approved Funding: $50,000

  • Stewart – EOC Preparedness

Total Approved Funding: $25,000

This funding is part of $1.8 million in provincial emergency preparedness funding going to 54 communities across BC. These investments will support local governments and First Nations to purchase equipment and supplies to maintain Emergency Operations Centres and enhance local training exercises.

This funding is provided through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) for programs to enhance the resiliency of communities in areas including flood mitigation, evacuation route planning, fire department equipment and training and well as Indigenous cultural safety & cultural humility training.
