Premier John Horgan concluded a successful fall session that saw government doing politics differently, working across party lines, and taking the first steps to make government work for everyone, not just the people at the top.
In the Fall session of the B.C. Legislature, government:
- Banned corporate and union donations and put strict limits on individual contributions, to make sure only people living in B.C. can donate to political parties. These new rules apply at the provincial and municipal level.
- Set the terms for a referendum on proportional representation to take place by Nov. 2018, to let people decide how they vote.
- Enacted new lobbying restrictions to make sure former public office holders do not improperly benefit from their experience serving the public.
- Launched a new pilot project to provide legislative drafting services to all opposition members of the Legislative Assembly.
Quote from Premier John Horgan:
“Our government inherited some big problems. Government had been operating under the influence of big money, putting the wealthy first, and leaving everyone else behind. We’re doing things differently and working across party lines to make life better for everyone, not just a few at the top. And we are making reconciliation with Indigenous peoples a cross-government priority. These are just the first steps. There’s much more to come.”
