BC Liberals continue to support unfair tolls on the Port Mann Bridge

A tweet by BC Liberal House Leader Mary Polak raises questions about whether the BC Liberals would bring back tolls on the Port Mann bridge.

Polak defended tolls on the Port Mann, saying the BC Liberals considered it a solution to traffic congestion –  “Congestion returned when the tolls were removed which was predicted by all the traffic modelling – the reason we retained them.” (2020-01-09)

Polak does not acknowledge the impact Port Mann tolls had on diverting traffic to the Alex Fraser and Pattullo bridges.

Reinstating tolls on the Port Mann would cost daily commuters up to $1,500 a year.

Garry Begg, MLA Surrey Guildford:

“John Horgan put $1,500 back in people’s pockets when he cancelled bridge tolls in 2017. That’s extra money for groceries, sports registration, or just to help families start saving. For years, Andrew Wilkinson and Mary Polak unfairly charged commuters from Surrey and the Fraser Valley while cutting taxes for the richest 2%. It’s clear the BC Liberals haven’t changed and it’s disappointing to hear they might do it again. Andrew Wilkinson is a risk British Columbians can’t afford to take.”
