VANCOUVER – New Democrat MLAs Shane Simpson, Adrian Dix, David Eby and Mable Elmore are welcoming new child care investments at five organizations in Vancouver. Local families will benefit from 207 funded child care spaces with fees capped at $200 per month or eliminated altogether.
The initiative is part of a B.C. government pilot project that will deliver $10-a-day (or less) child care to parents. Child care providers participating in the pilot will receive government funding to cover their operational and administrative costs, and in return, fees will be eliminated or capped at a maximum of $200 per month.
Emma’s Early Learning and Care Centre, Hastings Park Child Care Centre, Collingwood Neighbourhood House, Langara Child Development Centre, and Hummingbird Under Three are just five of the 53 organizations across the province that will be participating in the pilot project. This funding is a part of the B.C. government’s $60 million Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) agreement with the Government of Canada.
“For too long families in East Vancouver have been struggling with rising child care and housing costs. We know affordability is a top of mind issue for working families in our city, which is why today’s announcement is set to make life easier for those that call our city home.” Shane Simpson, MLA for Vancouver-Hastings
“Collingwood Neighbourhood House has been a longstanding pillar in our community and I couldn’t be happier to welcome 49 funded spaces to this important organization. Our government is committed to turning a new page on child care, benefitting families in all corners of our province.” Adrian Dix, MLA for Vancouver-Kingsway.
“We know that childcare is essential for working families and I am glad that families and are finally receiving the supports they deserve.” David Eby, MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey
“This announcement marks the next step towards a universal, affordable child care system in British Columbia. Our government is following through with our promise to deliver affordable, quality child care making life more affordable for families in Vancouver and across the province.” Mable Elmore, MLA for Vancouver-Kensington
