NDP’s Michele Babchuk sworn into Legislature as North Island MLA

VICTORIA – Michele Babchuk was sworn into the Legislature virtually today, as the new BC New Democrat MLA for North Island following an historic election.

The 57 new BC NDP members were sworn in as part of part of British Columbia’s 42nd Parliament, all focused on supporting people through the COVID-19 pandemic and delivering on their commitments to British Columbians.

“I’ve dedicated much of my life to community advocacy and I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to continue this calling at a provincial level,” said Michele Babchuk, MLA for North Island. “I know the issues we face in the North Island are unique and urgent and the past year has been a struggle for many in our community. I am committed to keeping family-supporting jobs close to home and working to improve the services people rely on.”

The election of this New Democrat caucus features a number of notable milestones, including:

  • First majority-women governing caucus in Canadian history
  • Largest BC NDP caucus in history
  • Highest number of IBPOC MLAs ever in a caucus in BC

British Columbians put their trust in New Democrats to lead the province’s pandemic recovery, and this diverse team will ensure no one gets left behind as we move forward.
