VANCOUVER– New Democrat Leader John Horgan issued the following statement in honour of International Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“Today is a solemn day, a day where we remember the atrocities that were suffered by members of the Jewish community and other targeted communities during the Holocaust.
“We must remember the women, men, and children who were murdered for their race, their religion, and because of the communities they were connected to. We must remember the horrors of genocide and vow to never let it happen again.
“At a time when we see bigotry rising in our communities, we must be ever vigilant. We cannot allow oppression and racism to thrive among us.
“We cannot stand idly by while people with hatred in their hearts sow discord and division in our communities– planting the seeds of future violence.
“As we remember the victims of the Holocaust, Jewish and non-Jewish, who were murdered, and those who still suffer, we must vow to honour their suffering by teaching future generations about the importance of tolerance, understanding, and the courage to challenge those who would spread hatred.
“We will always remember.”
