VICTORIA – B.C. New Democrat leader John Horgan congratulates the Canadian-Fijian community as they celebrate their nation’s 44th independence anniversary. The country gained independence from the United Kingdom on Oct. 10, 1970.
“On behalf of the New Democrat caucus, we extend our best wishes to the Canadian Fijian community as they celebrate the 44th anniversary of the Fiji Republic’s independence this Oct. 10. Canada has long been a home away from home for many Fijians and our citizens share a mutual commitment to democracy and freedom,” Horgan said.
Bruce Ralston, New Democrat spokesperson for trade and multiculturalism, said: “The many Fijians who call Canada home have long been valuable and tireless contributors to their local communities and have excelled in many areas of society through hard work and participation in all areas.
“As Fiji continues to play its part in the South Pacific we hope for another year filled with peace, progress and prosperity for all its citizens.”
