VANCOUVER – New Democrat MLAs Bowinn Ma and Spencer Chandra Herbert are welcoming more than $100,000 in provincial government funding for HUB Cycling and the BC Cycling Coalition, to help make transportation by bike healthier, safer and more accessible in the lower mainland.

“Bike to Work and School Week promotes active transportation options that will help make B.C. a cleaner, healthier province,” said North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA Bowinn Ma. “Active transportation is an affordable, sustainable way to commute that deserves government’s full support as we work to improve safety for all those who cycle.”

“HUB Cycling, and the BC Cycling Coalition help promote informed decisions in transportation planning and remind everyone that if you can cycle instead of driving, you can help reduce traffic congestion and fight climate change,” said Vancouver-West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert.

HUB Cycling and TransLink received $61,485 to work with municipalities on a common framework to classify cycling routes throughout the region, helping people choose the most appropriate routes for their purposes and skill levels, between municipal boundaries.

The BC Cycling Coalition, the leading voice in B.C. for cycling transportation, recreation and tourism, received a $49,000 grant along with funding from CleanBC, TransLink, and the Real Estate Foundation of BC to organize the BC Active Transportation Summit (June 17-18) in New Westminster. The Summit will bring together planners, engineers, local and provincial government representatives, and experts from non-profits, industry and academia who will explore ways to make active transportation for pedestrians, people with disabilities, and cyclists an integral part of communities throughout B.C.

Making walking, cycling, and wheelchair-accessible paths as safe and convenient as possible, and improving cycling infrastructure and tourism is part of the New Democrat government’s CleanBC plan to put B.C. on a path to a low-carbon economy that creates opportunities for all while protecting our clean air, land and water.
