VICTORIA – Parliamentary maneuvers will do nothing to get B.C. closer to an LNG industry that meets our needs, say B.C.’s New Democrats.
Green member of the legislature Andrew Weaver has proposed an amendment to the government’s Throne Speech that effectively says “no” to building an LNG industry.
“Just because Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals can’t manage the LNG opportunity, and Andrew Weaver can’t imagine it, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pursue it,” said New Democrat spokesperson for natural gas development Bruce Ralston.
“Our province needs to build an LNG industry that includes express guarantees of jobs and training opportunities for British Columbians, a fair return for our resources, benefits for First Nations, respects our climate change goals and protects of our air, land and water,” said Ralston.
New Democrat House Leader Mike Farnworth said that New Democrats will not support Mr. Weaver’s motion, not only because it is intended to say no to LNG, but also because no amendment can make a bad throne speech better.
“New Democrats aren’t interested in propping up the B.C. Liberals’ hollow throne speech with Mr. Weaver’s amendment or without,” said Farnworth.
